Tinago Falls
ILIGAN CITY’s best kept secret, aptly named Tinago Falls (“Tinago” means “hidden” in the vernacular) is nestled in a ravine between two mountains. This 128-meter (420 feet) natural wonder is one of Northern Mindanao’s most interesting tourist destinations.
Tinago Falls is actually just one of the 23 waterfalls found in the city of Iligan.
Location
- Iligan City in Northern Mindanao
- Tinago Falls is located about 14 kilometers from the city proper.
How to get there
- From the city proper, take a jeepney ride to Barangay Buru-un. Estimated travel time = 1 hour.
- In Buru-un, hire a “Habal-Habal” for an approximately half-an-hour motorcycle ride.
- Finally, visitors will have to negotiate a narrow mountainside trail on foot. The trek down the falls is usually muddy and slippery.
Primary Attractions
- Tinago is composed of a major waterfall and several smaller ones surrounding it.
- All these cascades – drawing water from Lake Lanao – deliver fresh, clean, and cool water into a pool. Bathing on the pool is allowed and generally safe.
- The place around Tinago offers a very rich selection of flora, including giant ferns and wild passion fruit plants.
- Tinago falls has recently become the second most visited waterfall in the country (next to Maria Cristina Falls) with up to about 100,000 visitors every year.
